Service Description
Skills Obtained: New skills/knowledge, behavior, deescalating, communication & problem solving Course Description: This course combines Effective Communication, Community Policing and other courses for line level patrol or corrections officers. It is designed to familiarize public safety employees with communication and problem solving skills while at the same time maximizing effectiveness of expanded efforts in building trust and respect. Communication skills in this course will be verbal and non-verbal and be respectful of the culture of the residents in the community. The problem solving skills will be on a continuum starting at the basic first time encounter and continuing through encounters with the potential for violent outcome. Course Objectives: The overall goal of the Interacting with the Public in a Positive Way course is to give officers the knowledge to have positive encounters with all citizens/people. • Upon completion of this instruction, the participant will know/be able to: • Use communication and problem solving skills for maximum effect • Understand verbal versus nonverbal communication • Skillfully build trust for mutual respect • Basic Community Oriented Policing education • Communication and officer safety • Appropriate actions based on a “Continuum of Encounters” response Recommended Audience: Beginning level Law Enforcement officers patrol or corrections.
